iPhone Navigation Controls
To display a hierarchy of information, the iPhone uses table views. Accessory icons indicate there is another layer to the hierarchy.
A gray arrow (chevron?) is called a
disclosure indicator
and is used to tell the user that touching that row will droll down to another table view -.
A detail disclosure button indicates tells you that selecting that row will reveal, and perhaps allow you to edit, more detailed information about the current row -
You use a checkmark when a touch on a row results in the selection of that item. This kind of table view is known as a selection list, and it is analogous to a pop-up list. Selection lists can limit selections to one row, or they can allowed multiple rows with checkmarks.
